General dentistry is the foundation of good oral health for our patients. Getting routine check-ups and professional cleanings will help to keep your smile in tip-top shape.
Patients who visit their dentist every six months as recommended are less likely to develop advanced oral diseases. Instead, issues like cavities or gum disease can be diagnosed early and treated with minimal disruption for the patient. Most patients would prefer to get a filling for a small cavity rather than a crown to restore a severely damaged tooth, for example.
Furthermore, the dentist also screens patients for signs of oral cancer at these check-ups, so they can truly be life-saving care. The prognosis for oral cancer is good when it is caught early. The outlook is much worse if the cancer has already spread. Semiannual check-ups with your dentist improve your chances that oral cancer can be diagnosed and treated early.
When a patient does show signs of a problem like tooth decay or periodontal disease, a general dentist can provide a treatment to address the problem or refer the patient to a specialist if such care is warranted. General dentistry includes treatments like fillings, dental bonding and tooth extraction, in addition to exams and cleanings.
Professional cleanings performed by a dental hygienist are also instrumental in maintaining a healthy smile. Many parts of your smile are difficult to reach with brushing and flossing alone, and a hygienist has a better angle and specialized tools to clear away any plaque and tartar buildup that you may miss in your home oral hygiene routine.
Many patients are familiar with the concept of general dentistry if they’ve kept up with these appointments in the past. Some others may have questions about this part of dental medicine.
Here are some questions that may be asked about general dentistry:
At a minimum, patients should be examined by a dentist and get professional cleanings twice each year. We also recommend x-rays at least yearly so that the dentist can inspect surfaces of the teeth that may be obscured from view. Patients who are prone to accumulating plaque and tartar quickly may want to get more frequent cleanings. Additionally, patients who have a history of numerous cavities or a previous episode of periodontal disease may want to be monitored more often by a dentist as well. Talk to your dentist to see what schedule makes the most sense for you.
Even if you are diligent about brushing and flossing according to your dentist’s recommendations, it’s still difficult, if not impossible for patients to thoroughly clean all of the surfaces of their teeth. A dental hygienist is better situated to access those hard-to-reach areas of your smile. Furthermore, they are trained to use specialized instruments that are effective at removing plaque and tartar buildup.
Cavities are caused by oral bacteria that congregate in plaque, so keeping those bacteria in check is the main focus of cavity prevention. Good oral hygiene habits are essential to this effort. Be sure that you are brushing and flossing daily using proper technique to clear away the bacteria. Because those bacteria also feed on sugar, limiting your sweet treats (and ideally brushing after you enjoy any sweets) also can help to reduce your risk of cavities.
Toothaches can be terribly disruptive, and when you’re established with a general dentist who provides you with routine care, it can be easier to be seen quickly to get some relief from your symptoms. If you cannot get in to see the dentist right away, you can ease any discomfort by using over-the-counter painkillers or products specifically formulated to reduce the pain associated with a toothache. Don’t delay a dental appointment to try to self-treat for a toothache, though. You should be examined by a dentist to determine what is causing your toothache.
Has it been more than six months since your last visit to the dentist? If so, we encourage you to get back on track by calling our office to schedule a check-up. If you’ve been committed to coming in twice a year, congratulations! And keep it up!

I still have a few appointments to go before I am completed. The best people are Steven and Maria. I suffer from MASSIVE dental anxiety without these 2 people I would NOT have made it threw my appointments. I have gotten my top permanent teeth in and they are beautiful. Working on the bottoms next. I am for the first time in my life, looking forward to my next appointment.
